Background of the study
Nigerian English, as used in professional contexts in Abuja, exhibits a unique morphological complexity shaped by both indigenous influences and global linguistic trends. This study evaluates the morphological features that characterize Nigerian English among professionals, focusing on affixation, compounding, and derivational processes. In professional settings, language is a tool for precise communication, and morphological innovations are often employed to articulate specialized concepts (Uche, 2023). Nigerian English displays a dynamic interplay between formal language norms and creative expressions that arise from multicultural interactions. The influence of local languages results in distinctive morphological patterns that differentiate Nigerian English from its global counterparts (Nwosu, 2024). Furthermore, exposure to digital communication and international business practices contributes to ongoing evolution and complexity in word formation (Akinyemi, 2025). By analyzing written documents, corporate communications, and spoken discourse, this study aims to uncover the extent and nature of morphological complexity in Nigerian English as used by professionals in Abuja, thereby informing language policy and professional communication training.

Statement of the problem
Despite its recognized distinctiveness, there is limited research on the morphological complexity of Nigerian English among professionals in Abuja. Observations suggest that the language exhibits unique derivational and compounding patterns influenced by indigenous linguistic structures, yet empirical data are scarce (Uche, 2023). This gap in knowledge hinders the development of targeted communication strategies and professional language training programs. The lack of comprehensive analysis makes it difficult to understand how morphological complexity affects clarity and effectiveness in professional settings (Nwosu, 2024). Addressing this gap is essential for informing language policy and enhancing the overall quality of communication in the professional sphere (Akinyemi, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

To evaluate the morphological complexity of Nigerian English among Abuja professionals.

To analyze derivational and compounding processes in professional discourse.

To assess the influence of indigenous languages on morphological patterns.

Research questions:

What are the key morphological features of Nigerian English in professional settings?

How do derivational and compounding processes contribute to morphological complexity?

What role do indigenous languages play in shaping these morphological patterns?

Research Hypotheses:

Nigerian English in Abuja exhibits significant morphological complexity.

Derivational and compounding processes are more pronounced in professional discourse.

Indigenous language influences enhance the uniqueness of Nigerian English morphology.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it provides a detailed evaluation of morphological complexity in Nigerian English, offering insights for language training and policy development in professional environments. The findings will benefit educators, communication specialists, and policymakers (Uche, 2023; Akinyemi, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to evaluating morphological complexity in Nigerian English among professionals in Abuja. It focuses exclusively on morphological features and does not cover other aspects of language use.

Definitions of terms:

Morphological Complexity: The degree of intricacy in the formation and structure of words.

Nigerian English: A localized variety of English spoken in Nigeria with distinct linguistic features.

Professionals: Individuals engaged in formal employment sectors in urban settings.
